Types of Dance
Ballet
Ballet is a highly disciplined and technical dance form that emphasizes precision, grace, and controlled movement. The artistry of ballet lies in its ability to blend athleticism with elegance. Its structure, set to classical music, is also distinct, incorporating specific terminology (in French) for various movements and positions, ensuring a standardized form across the world.
Pre Pointe
Pre-Pointe is available to dancers who have shown physical, mental and emotional readiness, and is taken in addition to a dancer’s weekly ballet technique classes. The curriculum includes: a look into the history of Pointe and how it evolved; a basic understanding of the anatomy of the foot, as well as the structure of the pointe shoe; proper foot care; and how to care for and sew ribbons and elastic onto pointe shoes. Most importantly, dancers will work to strengthen the muscles and technique needed for success in pointe shoes. Teacher recommendation is required for this class.
Pointe
Pointe classes are taken in addition to a dancer’s weekly ballet technique classes. Pointe work is a specialized aspect of ballet that involves dancers performing on the top of their toes using pointe shoes, requiring an excellent level of strength, control, and precision. Teacher approval is needed to achieve pointe shoes.
Jazz
Jazz is a vibrant and energetic style that blends rhythmic, dynamic movements with an emphasis on individual expression and personal style. Rooted in African American dance traditions, jazz incorporates elements of improvisation, sharp isolations, and syncopated rhythms.
Musical Theatre
Musical theatre is a captivating blend of dance and acting, where movement plays a vital role in telling a story while supporting the music and lyrics of a song or production. The choreography is highly theatrical, focusing on character-driven movements that help define the personalities and relationships of the performers.
Tap
Tap is a unique and rhythmic form of dance where the focus is on creating sound through the movements of the feet. Dancers wear shoes with metal taps on the heels and toes, which produce a distinctive percussive sound as they strike the floor.
Lyrical
Lyrical is a graceful and expressive style that blends elements of ballet and contemporary dance to convey emotion and tell a story. Typically performed to slow, lyrical music, this style focuses on fluid, flowing movements that mirror the mood and lyrics of the song.
Modern
Modern emerged as a departure from the rigid structure of classical ballet. Modern works with the natural forces of gravity, embracing the body's weight, fall, and recovery. Techniques like contraction and release (pioneered by Martha Graham) and the use of floor work are common, creating a grounded, raw aesthetic.
Contemporary
Contemporary places a strong focus on connecting with the music and telling a story through movement, but it also encourages individual expression, allowing dancers to explore their own creative voices. Techniques such as floor work, lifts, and partnering are often used. This genre is not confined to any one style, making it versatile and constantly adapting to contemporary culture, music, and individual artistry.
Hip Hop
Hip-hop dance is a high-energy and dynamic style that originated in urban communities in the 1970s, driven by the cultural movements of hip-hop music and street art. This genre includes isolations, popping, locking, breaking, and krumping, with an emphasis on sharp, angular movements, fluid body waves, and intricate footwork.
Strength & Stretch
Strength & Stretch class is designed for our dancers to strengthen the body with attention and care. We break down the muscle groups being used during specific exercises while focusing on repetition and control. This class will educate dancers on how to use their muscles properly in daily dance classes and in day-to-day life and is intended to prevent injuries. This class features Kinesiology to broaden the understanding of our bodies.
Acro
Acro is a unique fusion of dance and acrobatics, combining the fluidity and expression of dance with the strength, flexibility, and skill of gymnastics.
